Another year another failed Olive Harvest

Well here it is 2012 and June bought us another lesson from Mother Nature, Draught this year, 3 weeks before Harvest almost all the fruit/olives fell from the trees. This was the first time the trees had not received one single drop of water from us. NO WATER IN THE DAM AT ALL.

On a happier note since March we have been hosting young people from around the world under the Wwoofer scheme Willing Workers on Organic Farms. Young people who are traveling the world come and stay with a host and for food and board they lend a hand with all the work that needs doing around here.
We have had Andy from Canada, Ian from the UK, Laura from the UK, Miranda from Taiwan, Jen, Kate, Claire and Dana also from the UK, Saila and Carolina from Finland, Hazel from Hong Kong and Kana from Japan.
And as we are having our wettest Spring in 5 years it has been a great help and keeps us all busy.

A whole year has past and here we are again Spring 2010

The news from our grove for the harvest of 2010 is not the best.
4 days prior to harvest 14th June 10, Jack Frost came to visit unannounced 3 mornings in a row. So our fruit froze and we lost almost our entire crop we salvaged just 888 kilos which gave us 200 litres of a good oil.
Because we believe in only producing the very best quality olive oil from our grove we then had to drop approx 10 tonnes of fruit to the ground to ensure good flowering and fruit set for 2011.
We have sent our oil to Italy, Canberra and Perth again for judging, we await the results.
Once again this August we hosted a pruning seminar here with Chris Butler from Olive Matters, and this year we followed up with a Sensory Evaluation seminar,run by Chris, which was enjoyed by a small but enthusiastic group, some from as far away as North of Gingin and Bunbury. We enjoyed a wonderful Italian lunch, Menu: Pinzimonio (crudites)
La Fettunta ( Bruschetta Alla Toscana, Pasta al'olio e aglio (Oil and Garlic Pasta) and to finished off with an Olive oil and Fig cake, all accompanied by a excellent Mount Barker Riesling.
The day started with a power point presentation, guided tasting and after lunch a formal blind tasting of local, National and Italian olive oils. This bought about some very interesting comments and conversation.

We are now busy pruning all of our 1700 trees and mulching up the prunings and spreading it around each of our trees as this winter we have received almost no rain, our dams do not have enough water to irrigate the grove this year. We are hoping for good Spring rains and more in March and May to get our trees through untill harvest June 2011.

February 2010 and lots has happened

Well how time flies, since our last post back in September.
Our 2009 Extra Virgin Olive Oil has again been selected by Marco Oreggia for his book and our score has increased on last years.
Silver medal from Western Australian Olive Association.

More and more restaurants now use our olive oil which is extremely pleasing and they all say that the price is exceptional at $8.00 per litre, this is for amounts over 50 litres in any one year.

We now have our olive oil for sale in casks, this reduces the price and most importantly keeps our olive oil fresher longer as there is no air or light exposure.

2 litre $45.00
4 litre $65.00
10 litre $120.00
Postage depends on the destination point.

And we still have the 500ml bottle $20.00, 750ml bottle $25.00 postage $5.00 within the state $8.00 interstate.

Bulk sales at very good prices, depending on volume, packaging and freight requirements.

For the first time since 5005 we still have water in the dam so we can still irrigate the grove, the fruit is already looking a good size. Up until the last 7 days we had had a fairly cool summer except for one or two days and several days that were overcast and drizzle. The last week though has been unbearably hot, thank goodness we still have water for the olives.

We ran a very successful pruning seminar over 2 days here at the fun this week. Unfortunately the weather was terrible, not a lot of rain, which we need just freezing cold and very strong winds.

I should have been out there today pruning our trees for a good crop next year, but I did not want to be blown off my ladder.

Yes Spring has well and truly sprung all the way back to winter.

Our new seasons olive oil is out on the shelves and selling well.

Our olive oil will be show cased at the Olive oil Awards dinner next week in Perth the chef is using our olive oil in a dessert, so it will be very interesting to see what type of dessert he makes as we feel out 2009 oil is a robust spicy oil.

Hi all,

We are excited about the interest shown by Japanese folk who work with Jim about our olive oil,

We hope this leads to finding an importer who distributes to gourmet stores in Japan.

They are very excited about olive oil generally , but really excited about knowing the people involved with the grove. Jim has to buy a bigger bag to take the olive oil orders back to the ship.

Well now that our 2009 Olive Oil is all blended, we are flat out with all the back orders. Spending our days bottling and delivering.

We still can not get over just how luscious and delicious our olive oil is this year, so good we can't get enough of it.

We have just completed our 2009 Olive Harvest.
Our good friends and family gathered to help us harvest our olives.
